Profile

Increasingly, rail operators and customers are seeking innovative, flexible, short and long term lease solutions to their rail logistics requirements. Seasonal and shipping driven traffic demands can often result in specialized rolling stock lying idle for extended periods.

In addition to its investment in locomotives and new wagons, CFCLA has completed the Australian built of 75 new CQGY multi-purpose low profile semi-skeletal wagons. These have been specifically designed to accommodate CFCLA.s 30-foot domestic bulk product containers fitted with automated loading and unloading features. The new multi-purpose wagon can accommodate two 30-foot bottom discharge containers or standard 20-foot and 40-foot ISO containers, as well as 48 and 53-foot domestic containers. CQGYs have also been double-stacked across the Nullabor.

50 new CQKY multi-purpose wagons have been constructed by Bradken Rail. These wagons are able to accommodate 20-foot and 40-foot bottom discharge domestic bulk containers, as well as 20-foot and 40-foot ISO containers. The design of the CQKY allows it to be gauge convertible, fitting within the outline of Narrow, Standard and Broad Gauge loading specifications.

By the end of 2006, Bluebird Workshops will have completed the 3rd series of CQMY wagons - bringing the CQMY fleet total to 101. The CQMY is a low deck, high speed, 4 TEU wagon with a very low tare weight of 22t. The wagon has been designed to a 100t gross standard. These CQMY wagons have so far served customers very well in 2005 and 2006, carting 40ft container throughout Australia.

In 2005/06 CFCLA took delivery of 75 Chinese CQBY wagons. These wagons have provided reliable service with many customers. It is anticiapted that another 100-200 will be ordered in 2007. These new wagons will have 30ft container capabilities - increasing the flexibility of the rollingstock.

These new wagons will therefore maximise the utilisation of high value assets at the same time providing shippers greater flexibility in responding to seasonal traffic demands.

Currently 5 CQOY wagons are currently on hire to United Group, and are being used in the construction of the Chatswood to Epping Rail-Link.

Rolling Stock - Container Flats

CFCLA currently own or manage over 600 container wagons, with an anticipated 100-200 wagons being manufactured in 2007, by various Australian and overseas workshops. This large build program may also include 5-pack skels and well wagons.

The fleet of container wagons range from solid deck to skeletal, with lengths varying from 40ft to 85ft - capable of carrying 20ft, 30ft, 40ft, 48ft and 53ft containers. Double stacking west of Adelaide has also occurred utilizing CFCLA wagons.

Many of the container wagons have a low deck profile of 1020-1040mm, and are fitted with high speed 70t ride control or crossed braced bogies, allowing speeds up to 115km/h.

Over 50% of the container fleet is less than 6 years old, with another 10% of the fleet being constructed in 2006. CFCLA is dedicated to providing economical wagons with a high capacity and low tare weight, allowing maximum efficiency in moving containerized goods.

Rolling Stock - Grain Hoppers

CFCLA have a fleet of 123 brand new high capacity grain hoppers. Built by Alstom between 2001 and 2004, these wagons have a gross weight of 92t in the 3735mm high design, and 100t in the 4070mm high design.

The pneumatic hatch system and discharge system complies with OHS regulations, and allows operators to easily load and discharge the commodity.

Complimenting the dedicated grain hoppers, are CFCLA.s unique bulk containers. These bulk containers are suitable to fit a number of CFCLA container flats, and range in size from 20ft, 30ft and 40ft. Products such as fertiliser, grain, soy beans, sorghum, and even aggregate have been successful transported using bulk containers. This innovative design provides shippers greater flexibility in responding to seasonal traffic demands.

Rolling Stock - Infrastructure Wagons

CFCLA have a large range of infrastructure equipment operating on narrow, standard, and broad gauge tracks around Australia. Narrow, Standard and Broad Gauge ballast hoppers have been fitted with Gemco door assemblies, and the unloading process is aided by use of a Cattron remote control system. By the end of 2006, all 64 CHMF wagons will be converted to a remote control discharge system.

CFCLA also own sleeper wagons, spoil wagons and rail carrying wagons - many of which are being upgraded in 2006 to provide greater efficiency and productivity for operators. Rail carrying wagons range in length upto 165m.

Ballast hoppers have recently been modified for operation on the Alice Springs to Darwin line. The hoppers carry managnese ore from Bootu Creek to the Port of Darwin for export on a daily basis. See 'Ore Hoppers'.

Rolling Stock - Ore Hoppers

CFCL Australia is focussed on providing innovative solutions to the booming minerals and ore market in Australia.

Currenlty CFCL Australia provide a train of 46 hoppers to OM Manganese Ltd for the haulage of Manganese lumps and fines from Bootu Creek (110km north of Tennant Creek) to the Port of Darwin, where the manganese os shipped to Qinzhou smelter in China. When in full production, the train will carry over 550,000 tonnes per annum, and travel over 350,000km per annum.

Brand new CHAY ore hoppers are being built by Bluebird Rail Operations in Adelaide. These hoppers will be in a twin pack configuration, and will have a variable volumetric capacity of 64 to 106 cubic metres, allowing the haulage of various minerals, ores, and aggregate. Each hopper has a pair of 6 metre long discharge gates, and an internal slope sheet of 67 degrees, ensuring that any product can be discharged with ease.

The first 35 twin pack CHAY hoppers are destined for the Northern Territory, carrying iron Ore for 'Territory Iron'.
